Condizione: VG-. 3rd Ed. xxiv+pp.457-768+(6, index); early owner's sm.label fr.pastedown, foxing to top half through to t.p. and (to lesser extent) from penultimate leaf to rear endpaper, otherwise clean, tight and undamaged with good gutters. Half leather and marbled boards covers have surface rubbing, joints and extremities also rubbed, fr.joint appears to have thin split but is quite tight and secure. First published in German in 1772, from 1792 at least this was, as here, subsequently issued in translation as Volume 3 of editions of Hartley's 'Observations on Man' (hence pagination), but is in effect a separate work which stands alone (although the Index covers all 3 vols). Apparently scarce.

A later printing of this key work by British philosopher, explaining his theories on the mind-body connection, including his doctrines of vibrations and associations, the formation and growth of consciousness, etc. With a third volume containing notes and commentary on the work by Herman Pistorius. David Hartley, as well as being a British philosopher, was the founder of the Associationist School of Psychology. GOOD condition, ex-library, from a theological institution. Spine labels, bookplates and minor library markings in the interiors of all three books. Front hinge of volume one cracked and split along the entire length, with the front cover tenuously attached. Leather splitting along the other hinges in, but covers more solid. Minor scuffing, uneven darkening and fading to the covers. Extremities scuffed and bumped. Spines very darkened. Minor scattered foxing and spotting in the interior. Notes in ink on a front endpaper of the first volume by previous owner.
