Large octavo, 212pp. A crisp, clean, lovely copy, very near fine, in the publisher's blue patterned Batik paper over boards, with green cloth spine and printed spine label, and retaining the extra spine label, hinged at the rear endpapers. Spine gently dulled, touch of wear to the very fragile corners, else a fresh, handsome copy. Contemporary bookplate to the front paste-down. In the publisher's slipcase with matching number, with a large chip on the bottom edge, and general edgewear, but still sound. This is number 75 of 200 limited copies printed on Borzoi rag paper and SIGNED by Mencken on the limitation page (another 35 copies were printed on Japan vellum). Among the scarcest of Mencken's signed limited editions to find in appealing condition. Mencken is a difficult figure, and was a polarizing writer even in his time. He was undoubtedly an elitist, and maintained and shared a number of bigoted views, many of which were notably wicked even compared to some of his contemporaries. However, though he wouldn't have said so explicitly or self-critically, Mencken seemed to have the deepest well of contempt for the ignorant American white man, who, given his power and privilege and array of delusions, was constantly in danger of driving humanity off a cliff. It is this suspicion of "the common man" that led Mencken to oppose many aspects of democracy, which he describes in this book.
