Product Description:The first volume of Donald Kagan's acclaimed four-volume history of the Peloponnesian War offers a new evaluation of the origins and causes of the conflict, based on evidence produced by modern scholarship and on a careful reconsideration of the ancient texts. He focuses his study on the question: Was the war inevitable, or could it have been avoided?Kagan takes issue with Thucydides' view that the war was inevitable, that the rise of the Athenian Empire in a world with an existing rival power made a clash between the two a certainty. Asserting instead that the origin of the war "cannot, without serious distortion, be treated in isolation from the internal history of the states involved," Kagan traces the connections between domestic politics, constitutional organization, and foreign affairs. He further examines the evidence to see what decisions were made that led to war, at each point asking whether a different decision would have been possible.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. First Edition. A fine-looking set of all four volumes of Donald Kagan's acclaimed magnum opus account of the war between Athens and Sparta (431 B.C. - 404 B.C.). From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Each is a First Edition, stretching from 1969 to 1974 to 1981 to 1987, each a cloth-bound hardcover in octavo format, sharp and distinct lettering to spines. The previous owner's ink-stamps here and there, a couple of dog-eared pages, else clean, unmarked and tightly bound. A publisher blurb notes, "The temptation to acclaim Kagan's four volumes as the foremost work of history produced in North America in the twentieth century is vivid. Here is an achievement that not only honors the criteria of dispassion and of unstinting scruple which mark the best of modern historicism but honors its readers," from a review by George Steiner in The New Yorker. Another notes, "A profound analysis of the relation of strategy to politics, a sympathetic but searching critique of Thucydides' masterpiece, and a trenchant assessment of the voluminous modern literature on the war," by Bernard Knox, in The Atlantic Monthly. Volumes contain scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. The Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, xvi [1], 2-420 pp.; The Archidamian War, [6], 7-391 pp.; The Peace of Nicias & the Sicilian Expedition, [6], 7-392 pp.; The Fall of the Athenian Empire, xviii [1], 2-455 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
