Paperback. Condizione: As NEW. Second printing. 311pp. 23 cm. in multicolored wrappers (sepia-toned pictorial front cover, orange and black backstrip, lime green rear cover). New. Introduction by Leslie Scalapino. Edited by Michael Rothenberg. Philip Whalen played a key role in the explosive poetic revolution of the fifties and sixties, and, like his college roommate Gary Snyderm took both poetry and zen seriously. An original troubadour and thinker-- confidant and ally to Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Michael McClure-- he is celebrated for his wisdom, honesty, daring, and good humor.

Prima edizione Copia autografata
Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Association copy, inscribed by Philip Whalen in a shaky hand on the title page: "For Brit Pyland, with all best wishes, Philip Whalen, San Francisco, 6:VI:99." Britton Pyland was a close friend, fellow Zen student, and roommate. As Crowded Beauty, a biography of Whalen, notes, he roomed with Pyland at his first practice at Tassajara, and when he returned to San Francisco after his time in Santa Fe, he roomed with Pyland again in a flat on Sanchez Street and visited the Hartford Street Zen Center each day. "Once a week Philip and Brit rearranged their front room and hosted an open sitting, attended betimes by poets, artists, and a few students from Philip's South Ridge days." This is a rare signature in this book (which was only issued in paperback), as Whalen was blind at this point and seldom made public appearances. To wit: Laid into the book is the pale brown cardstock program from the celebratory reading for Overtime given by Whalen's friends in his honor on August 21, 1999, more than three months after this inscription. Folded once, its interior prints Whalen's poem "Love Love Love Again" and the readers for that celebration: Gary Snyder, Bill Berkson, Michael McClure, Diane di Prima, David Meltzer, Joanne Kyger, Lawrence, Ferlinghetti, Leslie Scalapino (who wrote the intro to this book), Clark Coolidge, David Haselwood, Michael Rothenberg (who edited this book), and Norman Fischer. Also laid in are two unlined index cards with Pyland's notes on the order of readers and the poems they read. Gary Snyder started with "Sourdough Mountain Lookout" (Whalen's version)and "For Albert Saijo"; Bill Berkson followed with "Further Notice", and so on. Pyland refers to page numbers in these notes, suggesting he was reading along in the book during the reading. Whalen probably did not sign books at this celebration (was he there?), because we have seen at least one copy of this volume signed in his name by Gary Snyder at this event. Also laid in is a blue postcard broadside with Whalen's poem "Anchor Steam Beer, for Mike McClure," published by the Unspeakable Visions of the Individual, as well as a prospectus/ordering form for Some of These Days: Poems by Philip Whalen printed by Clifford Burke at Desert Rose Press. All in all a unique assemblage and association. The book is near fine with bumps or a bit of wear to corners, but the interior is clean and crisp.
