Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 3rd Edition. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, third edition, half-title, engraved portrait frontispiece, title in red and black, woodcut illustrations and diagrams, some foxing and soiling, contemporary calf, joints and corners worn, 4to, William & John Innys, 1726. This edition was edited by Henry Pemberton and Sir Isaac Newton wrote a preface with new edits, just one year before he passed away in 1727. This third edition printed in London is the very basis of all subsequent printings of the Principia and a true history existing through time. One out of 1250 copies (Demy 1000, regular issue, see below) printed and with complete pagination, this copy is a remarkable and rare book in the history of science. The 1726 edition was comprised of 1250 copies, evidenced by William Bowyer's paper stock ledger which records the following: Superfine 50 [largest paper]; Royal 200 [large paper]; Demy 1000 [regular issue]. Royal copies can be identified by their size and CC watermark. See: Henry P. Macomber and Gerald G. Grubb, "A census of the owners of copies of the 1687 first edition of Newton's Principia", PBSA 47 (1953), 269-304, p.293). Babson 11-12, Wallis 9.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, 3 vol., first 'Jesuit's' edition, titles in red and black with engraved vignette, illustrations and diagrams, in quarto (4to) Usual minor damp-staining and foxing, old ink stamp to titles, contemporary sheep, original hardcover, spines gilt, worn, Geneva, 1739-42. The Jesuit edition is based on the third edition of Newton s Principia (1687), by the minim frias Thomas Le Seur (1703-1770), Franēois Jacquier (1711-1788), both of whom were French priests, and Jean-Louis Calandrini (1703-1758), a Swiss mathematician. This edition includes several commentaries, explanations and addendums to the Principia that did not originate with Newton. The editors of the Jesuit Edition , made use of the formalism developed by Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), outlined in his work Mechanica (1736), to rewrite Principia s propositions into differential equations. Notably, the commentators "1) explain Newton s propositions in a clearer manner than Newton did; 2) translate the properties given by Newton geometrically in more analytical terms; 3) sometimes explain the development of physics, based on Newton s discoveries, after Newton (Bussotti and Pisano, 2014a, 35-36). Le Seur, Jacquier and Calandrini accomplished these tasks magnificently.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition to combine the Principia with the Fluxiones, bringing together Newton's most fundamental contributions in both physics and mathematics. In combining Newton's work on mechanics and calculus, this volume reflects the transitional period in the early 18th century as the mathematical community came to accept calculus, rather than geometry, as the appropriate language for describing mechanical dynamics. Even after four centuries of scrutiny, the Principia remains widely acknowledged as the "greatest work in the history of science" (PMM). Although Newton discovered differential calculus some 20 years before writing the Principia, the question of whether he applied calculus in the later text is contested. Many scholars see Newton's approach as essentially geometrical, but Fontenelle judged the whole work dependent on differential calculus, while later scholars have highlighted its use in earlier sections of the book. The Analysis per Quantitatum Series, Fluxiones ac Differentias, first published in 1711, gathers several mathematical tracts written in the late 1660s to prove Newton's priority in developing calculus. This edition of the Principia, the second to be published in Amsterdam, includes newly re-engraved plates and diagrams. Not in Babson; Gray 12; Printing and the Mind of Man 171 (the first edition of 1687); Wallis 12, 295. Quarto (256 x 192 mm). With 3 folding plates, title page printed in red and black and with engraved vignette, numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. Contemporary vellum over boards, manuscript titling to spine, raised bands, edges sprinkled red. Front pastedown with 20th-century bookseller's ticket of C. E. Rappaport, Rome, and remnants of bookplate; front free endpaper with near-contemporary ownership inscription of one Gaspari Banni; rear pastedown with 19th-century ink manuscript shelf label. Light bumping and rubbing, splitting and browning to front pastedown, minor foxing to otherwise crisp contents: a very good copy in attractive contemporary state.
