Epistemological research discusses the changes, advances and weaknesses in this area. It is considered important to analyse epistemological issues in the production of knowledge at public universities in the South. The lack of research investigating epistemological issues in Physical Education prompted this study on the production of Postgraduate Programmes at Public Universities in the Southern States in the period 2000-2010. The research analyses scientific production in Physical Education, and it is hoped that this will complement previous studies, with a view to taking stock of national production. The characteristics and main trends of this form of production over the last 11 years were mapped. This investigation is characterised as bibliographical research, using the versions defended in these programmes as sources. As a result, we identified the presence of four theoretical-methodological approaches: Empirical-Analytical, Phenomenological-Hermeneutic, Post-Modern and Critical-Dialectical. The hegemony of the Empirical-Analytical tendencies in the programmes surveyed was evident.
