Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Softcover. First Dell-Putnam Printing 1966. Book is in Very Good condition, with a few small chips and a missing corner of the back jacket. Otherwise clean, tightly bound, and unmarked. Pinktoes is a satirical sex farce that explores race relations in a humorous and provocative way. The book's title refers to a term of affection used by Black men for white women, and vice versa. The story centers on Mamie Mason, a powerful and influential Harlem society matron. In a misguided effort to advance racial harmony, she hosts a series of lavish, desegregated sexual orgies. These events bring together a colorful cast of characters, including wealthy Black professionals and liberal white socialites, all of whom are eager to be seen as allies in the cause of racial justice. Himes uses the chaotic and absurd events of these gatherings to satirize the self-satisfied "do-gooders" who he believed used the "Negro problem" to work out their own neuroses. The novel debunks the sincerity of both the Black middle class and their white "sponsors," portraying them as self-serving and hypocritical. Known for its Rabelaisian humor and explicit content, Pinktoes was first published in Paris because it was too confrontational for American publishers at the time. It is regarded as one of Himes's most daring and cynical works of fiction, showcasing his unique blend of social commentary, satire, and dark comedy.
