During the last war a large crowd had…gathered there at noon one day when important news was expected from the front. The crowd began to push and shove, and there were shouts of impatience from those at the rear. Suddenly someone near the window climbed up on the ledge and in a loud voice began to read the news of what had happened. At first glance, this event is not dissimilar to what customarily happens on Sunday mornings when someone from the flock enters the pulpit to read aloud what has taken place. As a rule, one person reads and interprets the Word, while the others listen. This one person usually stands somewhat above the others, although of course this does not mean that he stands nearer to God than the congregation of listeners. His elevated position is merely practical, and essentially without significance. It is also not important whether this encounter with the Word takes place in a regular church building, a schoolroom, a grain mill, or a hospital ward; it is only essential that there be reading and listening. The central element in the Protestant church service is the Word--preaching.' (p. 9) VG orig. gray cloth in edgeworn gray dj.
