"Illustrated with five hundred and thirty-three engravings on wood." (from title page) The author, John Ashhurst (1839-1900), was a surgeon during the Civil War. In 1877 he was the the professor of clinical surgery in the University of Pennsylvania. This title was extremely popular and went through many printings.
