Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 3rd Edition. Small 4to. 402pp + (10)pp adverts. With hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, title-page, and 7 colour plates from drawings by H. Briscoe, numerous wood-engravings in text (many full-page), some signed, by F. Lydon, Justyrre or E. Whymper, each text page framed by border design of slender branches. Publisher's decorative pictorial gilt cloth, all edges gilt; lightly worn at edges. The third, greatly enlarged, edition of this encyclopaedic volume often seen as the epitome of books on the Victorian town garden. Contents cover the indoor garden, aquarium, fern case, balcony and window garden, floral ornaments, the miniature hothouse, and aviary for exotic birds. For outdoors, Hibberd gives details of design and layout for the conservatory, apiary, pleasure and flower garden, the rockery and wilderness, garden ornaments and constructions (the summer-house as temple, Moorish pavilion, thatched cottage or creeper-covered bower). Shirley James Hibberd (1825-90) was one of the most energetic and prolific of Victorian gardening writers with a broad range of interests; he was a vegetarian, and passionate grower of flowers, fruit and vegetables, so much so that he was continually moving further out of London in order to have space to research and experiment; he is also considered one of the most acutely observant social historians of his time. His books stand out particularly for the excellence of their production (possibly because he was apprenticed to a bookseller in his youth), the present volume with his publication, 'The Ivy', being the finest. This edition contains splendid illustrations of Hibberd's own fern house at Stoke Newington (p217), his mixed border with bulbs and evergreens illustrating the plunging system and the huge geranium pyramid in the flower garden. An exceptionally attractive as well as informative work. Nissen 876. Betty Massingham, 'A Century of Gardeners', 1982, pp54-66, Desmond, Dictionary of Botanists and Horticulturists, 1994, p339 (1st ed, 1856). Very slight wear at internal edge of endpaper, one or two v light finger marks in text, generally v good.

Prima edizione
First and second editions of this work by the one of the most popular Victorian gardening writers. Hibberd promoted gardening as a amateur hobby and was particularly interested in demonstrating how to make gardening accessible in cities. This is his guide to bringing the natural world into the home, accompanied by numerous charming illustrations. The success of the first edition quickly necessitated an expanded second edition, which is supplemented with many new illustrations. The popularity of Rustic Adornments led the publisher to invite Hibberd to start a monthly magazine for amateur gardeners, The Floral World and Garden Guide. This was one of many gardening journals that Hibberd was involved in, one of which (Amateur Gardening) remains the oldest gardening magazine to still be published today. He also wrote best-selling books on subjects such as roses, ferns, and profitable gardening: his "series of fluent and engagingly personal books contributed greatly to the new, highly decorative, ornamental fashion in gardens" (ODNB). Provenance: the distinguished antiquarian bookseller and collector Robin de Beaumont (1926-2023), a leading expert in Victorian decorative cloth bindings, with his book labels on the front free endpaper versos. Two works, octavo. Original red or green cloth, spines and covers lettered, framed, and blocked in gilt with elaborate foliate designs, terrarium motifs to spines and fountain centrepieces to covers, patterned endpapers, gilt edges, binder's tickets of Westleys and Co. to rear pastedowns. Chromolithograph frontispiece and additional title page to each edition, 5 tissue-guarded plates in each work, an additional 2 engraved plates in the second edition, head- and tailpieces, historiated initials, numerous illustrations within text, decorative border throughout contents. Both editions with 12-page advertisements at rear. Extremities rubbed, spines faded but otherwise gilt bright, cloth at ends of joints splitting, endpapers a little marked, remnant of tissue guard to frontispiece in first edition, contents clean: very good copies overall.
