Grant's world tour and followed by a more exciting sexual title. What's a door-to-door bookseller to do if they feel they're losing their audience after President Grant's widely criticized second term? That's when it's time to flip a little ahead to CREATIVE AND SEXUAL SCIENCE. This sales sample book allowed a bookseller to pitch their wares more efficiently by placing these quite disparate titles next to each other. The strategy evidently worked: at least one page of subscriber names has been removed, presumably to add them to the publisher's records for billing. An unusual and amusing example of a sales sample book. 8.75'' x 6''. Original green pictorial cloth boards. Green spine sample laid onto front pastedown, sheep leather spine sample to rear pastedown. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, illustrated in black and white throughout; fold-out sample to rear. Pagination varies; circa 300 pages. Light pencil doodle to frontispiece tissue guard, a childlike trace of the portrait of Grant. Binding with light bumping to corners and spine ends. Endpapers with mild offsetting, occasional tiny spots of soil to margins; closed tear to fold-out with small tape repair. At least one order form removed. Clean and tight.
