Aggiungi al carrelloTwo works in one volume, as issued, 8vo, pp. xvi, '250' (misnumbered for 328), with a folding letterpress table at the end; [ii], 107, [1] blank, [2] errata for the first work; contemporary full calf, spine with morocco label, marbled endpapers; rather rubbed, but sound. First and only edition of two works by Jean-François Dumas (1757-95), who was an avocat at Lons-le-Saunier and at the Revolution became charged with the administration of the département of the Jura, where he is said to have exercised wisdom and moderation. His elder brother René-François, however, was quite the opposite: one of the most bloodthirsty of the judges directing the Terror in the spring and early summer of 1794, he was closely associated with Robespierre during that time. When Robespierre fell, René-François shared his fate and was guillotined with him on 10 Thermidor (28 July) 1794. Meanwhile his brother had organised resistance in the Jura to the more extreme methods of the revolutionary government; to save himself he fled from France but later returned, only to die of an apoplexy in 1795. These seem to be his only publications, although an Adresse aux Etats-généraux, 'Dublin', 1789, is also attributed to him by the BnF catalogue - though as the author is described on the title page as 'ci-devant garde du corps du Roi' (which he was not), this attribution seems a little far-fetched.
