First edition. Factors which influence the way in which groups exploit their environment are many and varied. An important aspect of adaptation is the distribution of population. In this paper I wish to investigate how settlement patterns fitted in with other major factors to effect a successful adaptation to environment among a number of Iroquoian groups living in the Lower Great Lakes area at the time of contact, These groups lived next to each other in an area unmarked by striking geographic diversity. This and the many aspects of culture common to these groups render them suitable for a study not of violent contrasts, but of subtle differences in their patterns of adaptation. Condition: Spine sunned, corners bumped else very good.
