ABOUT THIS BOOK: A modified associationist analysis of directed thinking, i.e., that which leads to solutions of problems, is offered and an attempt is made to relate thinking to other aspects of behavior that have received more systematic study. Thinking is described in terms of chains of implicit symbolic transformational responses. The major conceptual device presented is the compound habit-family hierarchy which combines features of stimulus response chains and the tree structure representations characteristic of hierarchical approaches to thinking. Motivation for thinking is related to research on curiosity and conflict. A large amount of work by Piaget and Russian psychologists is reviewed and integrated into Berlyne's treatment of thinking.(American Psychological Association).
