Bohr visited the United States in 1923 and presumably presented this copy to Wickliffe Rose at that time. The essays are: I. On the Spectrum of Hydrogen (1914); II. On the Series Spectra of the Elements (1920); III. The Structure of the Atom and the Physical and Chemical Properties of the Elements (1921). Essay I. was initially published in Danish, II. in German, and III. in Danish. In addition to this English language edition of the three essays, there was also a German edition in 1922 and a French edition in 1924.
