The author takes the reader on a journey through the history of scientific discoveries, beginning with empirical laws governing the spectral lines of hydrogen, and moving on to the groundbreaking work of Planck and Rutherford on black body radiation and the nuclear model of the atom. The book delves into the challenges posed by classical physics in explaining these phenomena and presents a compelling argument for a new, quantum mechanical approach to understanding atomic behavior. The author's use of the quantum theory provides a framework for explaining the spectral lines of hydrogen and other elements, revealing a hidden correspondence between the structure of atoms and the properties of light they emit. This book offers a captivating glimpse into the revolutionary shift in scientific thought that occurred in the early 20th century, as physicists sought to unravel the mysteries of the atomic realm. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Niels Bohr (1885-1962) was a Danish physicist who played a key role in the development of atomic theory and quantum mechanics, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922. First published in 1924, this second edition of a 1922 original contains three essays by Bohr dealing with the application of quantum theory to problems of atomic structure: the first essay is on the spectrum of hydrogen; the second is on the series spectra of the elements; the third is on the structure of the atom and the physical and chemical properties of the elements. The essays do not aim at a comprehensive treatment of their subjects, instead providing the reader with a more accessible, generalised viewpoint. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Bohr's contribution to physics.

First Edition in English. INSCRIBED BY NIELS BOHR TO WICKLIFFE ROSE: "Dr. Wickliffe Rose/ with kind regards/ from the author." In 1923 Wickliffe Rose became the director of the International Education Board (IEB) for the Rockefeller Foundation. Bohr and his Institute for Theoretical Physics applied for, and received, one of the first IEB grants, in the amount of $40,000. Bohr visited the United States in 1923 and presumably presented this copy to Wickliffe Rose at that time. The essays are: I. On the Spectrum of Hydrogen (1914); II. On the Series Spectra of the Elements (1920); III. The Structure of the Atom and the Physical and Chemical Properties of the Elements (1921). Essay I. was initially published in Danish, II. in German, and III. in Danish. In addition to this English language edition of the three essays, there was also a German edition in 1922 and a French edition in 1924. Niel Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922, "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them.".
