Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st ed.(?). 5 plates (including frontis), iv, [1], 6-22, 49-50, 63-80, 23-286p. Recent 1/2 leather. One text leaf (135-136) loose and not bound in - probably an oversight by the rebinder. Lacks last leaf of index (287-288). Also lacks a printed title-page which we assume was dated 1815 and had a somewhat different title -- see the copy at the Lilly Library in Indiana for that title. Probably the first edition of this popular British cookery item although blessed with some oddly paginated leaves, probably from some later edition Hammond's work and inserted in this copy between between pages 22 and 23. Those pages are printed in different type and also a bit wider margined, etc. Orginal endpapers and blanks at beginning or end not preserved when this was rebound. Moderate soiling and wear as well as some minor stains. The medical advice often seems odd or ineffective but probably fits the period. Here is Hammond's remedy for headaches: "This unpleasant pain may be prevented by wearing the hair short, and by washing the head daily with cold water; then rub the hair dry, and expose it to the air." (page 211).
