This first edition in book form maintains the 1934 copyright date, though the letter code M-Y indicates the publication date was in fact December, 1949.

The Rio Grande was the epitome of mountain railroading, with a motto of 'Through the Rockies, not around them' and later 'Main line through the Rockies,' both referring to the Rocky Mountains. The D&RGW operated the highest mainline rail line in the United States, over the 10,240 feet (3,120 m) Tennessee Pass in Colorado, and the famed routes through the Moffat Tunnel and the Royal Gorge. At its height in the mid-1880s, the D&RGW had the largest narrow-gauge railroad network in North America with 2,783 miles (4,479 km) of track interconnecting the states of Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah" (Wikipedia). Wool's Texas operations during the Mexican War includes two Texas maps and 8 fine lithograph plates. The memoir by Capt. George W. Hughes concerns the march from San Antonio to Saltillo in 1846, during the Mexican-American War. This report is indicative of how the work of the Corps of Engineers supplied vital geographical information that assisted the United States after the close of hostilities. William Goetzmann points out in his excellent book, Exploration and Empire: the Explorer and the Scientist in the Winning of the American West, that Capt. Hughes's report sketched out the entire pattern of inner and outer Texas frontier defenses that was later adopted by the War Department.Account of Gen. One of the camp counselors was a young man called Roger…Staubach, who later played for the Dallas Cowboys.Crate was the Director of the Houston YMCA. The parent organization had established camps along the eastern seaboard and Crate felt the idea would succeed in Texas.According to an article written by Jane Ragsdale in the Kerr County Album, Crate's first summer was not what he expected: He had been promised by a hundred men that they would send their sons if he opened a camp�however Crate found himself with 21 counselors, and only 16 boys. His words of wisdom for those who followed: �Never start a camp from scratch.�.

Aggiungi al carrelloA beautiful mammoth-plate albumen photograph by William H. Jackson of the Royal Gorge in central Colorado. Jagged cliffs rise steeply into the sky, and the track of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway comes toward us from the distance, running along the Arkansas River. Jackson used a slight time exposure in taking this image, givi…ng the river a very fluid quality. The photograph is in a contemporary presentation frame, inscribed with the initials of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway in the bottom panel. This photograph was taken during Jackson's Denver era when he did extensive work for the railroads of Colorado and was given his own personal railroad car from which he based his photographic excursions and operations. This photograph is an example of the work Jackson did for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. Jackson (1843-1942) began his career in photography in 1858, working as a retouching artist in a studio in Troy, New York. In the 1860s, after serving briefly in the Union Army, he worked at several studios in Vermont before moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1867, where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, which earned him enough notice to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Nevada. In 1879, his work with the Survey at an end, he set up a commercial photography studio in Denver, marketing landscape photographs of the West. Jackson stayed in Denver until 1898, when he moved to Detroit. A beautiful image by William Jackson of this Colorado scene. Mammoth-plate albumen photograph, 22 x 17¼ inches. Jackson's name printed on the mat. Light discoloration in the sky in the upper center portion of the image. Near fine. Matted, glazed, and framed, with calligraphic manuscript title below the photograph. Contemporary wooden presentation frame (see below).

The photograph shows the narrow Toltec Gorge in the San Juan Mountains, through which the railroad ran its line into the Toltec Tunnel. Barren, rocky clif…fs rise majestically in the background, while the foreground is dominated by the icy Rio de los Pinos. Jackson appears to have used a slight time exposure in taking the photograph, giving the water and spray of the river an attractive milky quality. The photograph is in a contemporary presentation frame, inscribed with the initials of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway in the bottom panel. This photograph was taken during Jackson's Denver era when he did extensive work for the railroads of Colorado and was given his own personal railroad car from which he based his photographic excursions and operations. This photograph is an example of the work Jackson did for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. Jackson (1843-1942) began his career in photography in 1858, working as a retouching artist in a studio in Troy, New York. In the 1860s, after serving briefly in the Union Army, he worked at several studios in Vermont before moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1867, where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, which earned him enough notice to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Nevada. In 1879, his work with the Survey at an end, he set up a commercial photography studio in Denver, marketing landscape photographs of the West. Jackson stayed in Denver until 1898, when he moved to Detroit. An excellent Jackson image of a New Mexico scene. Jackson's name written in the negative and printed on the mat. Very light spotting, a touch of light wear at the corners. Near fine. Matted, glazed, and framed, with calligraphic manuscript title below the photograph. In April 1819 a constitution was approved establishing a congress with two legislative branches and an elected chief executive. Due to the local political situation, however, that constitution was not f…ully enacted. A new constitution, promoting a centralized system of government, was eventually drafted in 1826. This manifesto of the government's constitutional commission, presented to the Argentine representatives, reviews various aspects of the 1819 Constitution and proposes changes to be effected in the new document. Cherry was a mining engineer who produced several reports on mineral deposits in various areas of the United S…tates, and who authored other works for the Cincinnati and Sonora Mining Association (see Sabin, Howes, and the Streeter sale, all of whom list other works, but not the present title). Cherry's report is illustrative of a postCivil War boomlet of interest in the mineral wealth of the Sonora region of northern Mexico (doubtless aided by a rumor that the United States might annex it). Cherry writes glowingly of the potential mineral wealth of the area while downplaying the threat from hostile Apaches, objections from the Mexican government, and a shortage of labor. The geological report is quite thorough, and the maps show a portion of "Cherry's Traveling Military Map of Sonora" and the Ranche San Juan del Rio. OCLC identifies thirteen holding institutions. Presentation binding of dark blue morocco with red inlays, boards paneled and tooled in gilt, spine gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Boards scuffed and bowed, front joint weak.
