This was first published in Shanghai in 1857 and was instrumental to formally introduce Western medical methods into China. It was reprinted the next year in Japan. . * The Jesuits attempted to introduce Western anatomy to Chinese learned circles in the early 17th century but met with no success. Therefor from that time until the mid-19th century China was without Western surgical medical knowledge. . * Hobson's books were the first Western medical texts to be translated & printed in Chinese. They were widely circulated and accepted in China.
