Aggiungi al carrello36pp, light toning, stitched. Very Good. By "a Native Philadelphian of the third generation whose ancestors have done the State some service." Philadelphia has been "disgraced by the recent terrible outrages," a bloody religious war caused by a "the violence and permanence of fanatical prejudice. Protestant intolerance in reference to Catholicism." Moreover, "It is treason, rank foul treason, to our Religion; it is treason to the very spirit of our institutions,-- the American is a traitor to his country, who talks about this being a Protestant land, in order to justify his religious intolerance and proscription of others." Neither Sabin nor American Imprints records this rare Baltimore printing. The Philadelphia edition is common. OCLC 31630423 records eleven facsimile copies of the Baltimore printing, and OCLC 883841028 notes it but without a location. But we have located copies at the online sites of Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland. OCLC 883841028 [0 locations] as of July 2026. Not in Sabin, American Imprints, or at AAS online site. …

Aggiungi al carrelloPamphlet. First edition. Pamphlet of 47 pp. . Deaccessioned from the old Mercantile Library of Philadelphia, their light stamp to the title page and with old light brown leather covered boards, front board detached. Very scarce; OCLC located only one copy of the printed pamphlet; not in the AAS catalog. Exposition on the 1844 anti-Catholic riots in Philadelphia (variously called the Prayer Riots, Nativist Riots, Bible Riots). They took place on May 6,7 and 8, and again on July 6 and 7. As this papmplet notes only the May riots, it can be reasonably postulated that it was printed either in May or June of that year. In the months prior to the riots, certain nativist groups spread the unfounded rumor that the Catholic establishment was trying to have the Bible removed from schools. A number of Catholic churches were burned and fighting between nativists and soldiers sent to protect St. Philip Neri Church resulted iun several casualties. One by-product of this civil unrest was the reform of local law enforcement which was proven to have been ineffective.…

Aggiungi al carrelloPamphlet. 36p., pamphlet bound with thread, somewhat foxed, very good. Two versions of this pamphlet were published in 1844, the other a shorter tract published by M. Fithian; priority is not known to your humble cataloger. Some in Philadelphia's Protestant community, angered by the rise in Irish immigration to the city and by rumors that Catholics were attempting to remove Bibles from public schools, rioted in 1844, burning down Catholic churches and nearby homes. In this pamphlet, the author, who states that he is Protestant, chastises his fellow religionists for demonstrating bigotry and un-Christian temperament. "It is treason, rank foul treason, to our Religion; it is treason to the very spirit of our institutions, - the American is a traitor to his country, who talks about this being a Protestant land, in order to justify his religious intolerance and proscription of others.".…
