Five inscribed titles, late in the prolific career of staff writer of The New Yorker, novelist and screenwriter Eric Hatch (1901 - 1973), inscribed to prominent resident, Tracy Griswold, of Litchfield CT, where Hatch lived in his later years. H…atch was best known for comic novels, his most consequential "1101 Park Ave (1935 ) which was the basis for the classic screwball comedy "My Man Godfrey" (1936), starring William Powell and Carole Lombard, which he co-authored and for which he received an Oscar nomination. He then co-authored another screwball classic "Topper" (1937), starring Cary Grant and Constance Bennett. In Litchfield, Hatch was active in civic and social affairs, including the vibrant riding and carriage scene, which is the topic of some of the books in this lot. By year, titles are: THE JUDGE AND THE JUNIOR EXHIBITOR: A GUIDE TO BLUE RIBBON RIDING. NY: Duell Sloan, 1964. Inscribed on the half-title. Laid in are 9 snapshots of Hatch driving a carriage, one with his wife Connie and another with an unidentified man. THE YEAR OF THE HORSE. NY: Crown, 1965. Inscribed on ffe. A comic novel about how a loving father endures his teenage daughters devotion to riding. Adapted as the Disney movie, "The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit" (1968) starring Dean Jones and with a young Kurt Russell. THE COLONEL LADIES. NY: Crown, 1968. Inscribed on the ffe: "For Tarcy, Here is a little hostess present I made for you with my own hands. It might have been better if I had used my head as well. With love, Eric Hatch April 5, 1968." TWO AND TWO IS SIX. NY, Cown, 1969. Inscribed on the ffe. For juvenile readers. WHAT GOES ON IN HORSES' HEADS. NY: Putnam, 1960. Inscribed on the ffe. Another juvenile.
