These methods allow the compiler to determine the types of runtime objects during compilation. This eliminates the need for dynamic type determination at program execution time, speeding up the execution of such programs. The first method determines object types from the way these objects are defined, while the second determines object types from the way in which they are used. The theoretical bases of the two methods lie in the construction and analysis of a type lattice to represent the types of objects and in the use of monotone functions on the partially ordered sets represented by such lattices. The second method is employed only after the first since the first method is sufficient for many programming situations. The combination of the two methods can effectively reduce the range of types which can be assigned to the various objects of a program. The resulting type information can then be used during compile-time checking to assure that objects are used only in ways compatible with their types.
