Now, let me ask, why have not these learned Protes tants succeeded in establishi…ng a union among themselves? In reply, I will just tell what I heard the other day from a very intelligent Protestant: "It is no wonder," he said, "that the Catholics are united, and that the Protestants are not. The reason is clear:it is impossible to preserve unity in the Church, whilst it has no centre, nor any living authority to decide without appeal in all disputed points. Now the Roman Catholics have this ce ntre and this living authority; whereas the Protestants are deprived of it. When Luther and Calvin turned their backs upon the Roman Catholic Church, they took with them the Bible,but not the centre of unity and the authority of the Church. Nay, the Reformation was based upon the entire rejection of this centre and this living authority, capable of deciding on controverted points; consequently, we have no means of preserving unity amongst us."' (p. 11) : likely quoting John Dobree Dalgairns. `In April 1841, [Dalgairns] wrote to l'Univers, appealing for French sympathy, a letter which raised a storm. He was brought into contact with Fr Dominic Barberi through the latter's reply in the same journal. . .in Sept. 1845 .[he] was received into the Catholic Church by Father Dominic' (The letters and diaries of John Henry Newman, vol. VII, p. 517) -- Copies in British Library; also in 3 U.S. libraries (not identifying `Father Dominick' as Barberi); strangely not in the bibliography of Newman's tract and pamphlet collection.
