Paperback. Condizione: Good. This "lively, beautifully written biography" (Kirkus Reviews) of the famous Post-Impressionist artist who painted Starry Night and many other masterpieces is "fascinating reading" (School Library Journal, Starred Review). Vincent Van Gogh--one of the nineteenth century's most brilliant artist--will forever be remembered as the Dutchman who pioneered new techniques and styles and who, in a fit of passion, cut off his own ear. Whether painting a portrait, landscape, or still life, van Gogh sought to capture the vibrant spirit of his subject. Still, fame eluded him. This lack of recognition over a career spanning a mere decade (from ages twenty-seven to thirty-seven) fueled his lifelong self-doubt and bitter disappointments. Today, however, van Gogh's paintings are recognized as masterpieces, and the tormented Dutchman stands as a giant among artists. Vincent Van Gogh: Portrait of An Artist has been selected as a Common Core State Standards Text Exemplar (Grades 6-8, Historical/Social Studies) in Appendix B. It features a sixteen-page insert with family photographs and full-color painting reproductions and includes a glossary of artists and terms, a biographical time line, notes, a bibliography, and locations of museums that display Van Gogh's work. A ROBERT F. SILBERT HONOR BOOK AN ALA NOTABLE BOOK AN ALA BEST BOOK FOR YOUNG ADULTS A SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A BOOKLIST CHILDREN'S EDITOR'S CHOICE .…

Condizione: Fair. Written from the heart and without restraint, alive.--The New York TimesVincent van Gogh, the great but tormented artist, bared his tortured yet ecstatic soul in his letters to his confidant and companion, his beloved brother Theo. These letters reveal the man behind such masterpieces as The Starry Night and The Bedroom--a desperate man whose quest for love became a flight into madness and for whom every day was a fight for life. Irving Stone, acclaimed author of Lust for Life and other remarkable biographic novels, has collected Vincent van Gogh's fascinating letters to Theo. Here we see the great artist as a human being as well as a man with an appointment with destiny. Van Gogh is a man struggling with doubts and fears, beset by poverty and mental illness, but also a painter who dares to break all the rules of academic art to create priceless masterpieces never honored during his lifetime. He was part of the coterie of great artists of his day while as the same time an intimate of aging streetwalkers. These letters are outpourings of his soul that paint a vibrant self-portrait in words equal to the intensity and emotion his painting created. This is the personal story of a legend.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. This book provides a comprehensive overview of active anti-roll bar systems on heavy vehicles as one of the most effective solutions for improving the roll stability of these vehicles. Due to the characteristics of these vehicles with heavy loads and high center of gravity, the possibility of roll instability occurs frequently and causes serious consequences for human life, vehicles, and traffic infrastructure. The book gives readers an in-depth survey of the roll instability characteristics of heavy vehicles such as single-unit trucks with rigid and flexible frames, and tractor semi-trailers. It then introduces an active anti-roll bar system, the electro-hydraulic actuators which use control methods such as LQR optimal and H∞ robust controller design. This work introduces a new control method, which is a combination of robust control with the linear parameter varying system (H∞/LPV). The validation of the new hybrid method is carried out using the nonlinear truck model from the TruckSim(R) software to assess the roll stability of heavy vehicles in order to limit the rollover accident. A number of examples are provided to illustrate the research results, which helps the readers have a practical and easy approach that can be applied to other active anti-roll bar systems for most forms of transport vehicles in general. This book caters to academics and practitioners who are interested in active anti-roll bar systems for the typical heavy vehicle available worldwide.…

Hardback. Condizione: Fair. Beginning with their ambition to found an artists' colony and ending with each artist going his own way, this is the story of how, during autumn 1888, Van Gogh and Gauguin came to live together for two months, in Arles, in the south of France. It is not only the story of their friendship, it is also about how artists generate and share ideas and how they work. While they lived together, these artists had very different beliefs about art, which can be demonstrated through the subjects they painted, side by side. Reproductions of ten paintings by the men are included, so that their styles are approaches are evident. The contrast between the men (in appearance, manner and artistic approach) will provide ample material for discussion with children. Smith, Joseph A. (illustratore).…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Painters teach us to see, Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. But when Vincent's contemporaries looked at him, many of them saw only a madman -- dressed like a scarecrow wandering in the fields with canvases under one arm and paintbrushes under the other. But Vincent followed his passion and listened to the lessons nature taught him about light, shadows, shapes, and colors. And now that madman is one of the most famous painters in the world. Inspired by letters that Vincent wrote to Theo, his closest friend and constant encourager, the text of Vincent van Gogh and the Colors of the Wind is vibrantly illustrated in a style that recalls the paintings of the artist himself. The book also includes fourteen reproductions of van Gogh's actual paintings. This lyrical story provides a thoughtful and fresh look at the life of one of the world's most famous artists. Monaco, Octavia (illustratore).…
