Im weiteren Vorgehen wird dann ermittelt, wie Karl-Ludwig Woltmann die Philosophie, die Poesie und somit auch besonders die Spekulation im Zusammenhang mit der historischen Arbeit sieht und welche Bedeutung er ihnen diesbezüglich zumisst.Aus diesen Ergebnissen lassen sich dann im weiteren Verlauf Rückschlüsse und Ansätze bezüglich obiger Fragestellung erschließen.Nachdem die Methodik der Geschichtswissenschaft in der Schwellenzeit des auslaufenden 18. Jahrhunderts und den Anfängen des 19. Jahrhunderts ihren Höhepunkt findet, wird die Philosophie zu einem entscheidenden und bedeutenden Faktor der Historie und ihrer Arbeit.So fiel die Wahl meiner Quelle auf Karl-Ludwig Woltmanns 'Von der historischen Arbeit und dem Urtheil über dieselbe', in welcher er der Philosophie eine unentbehrliche Rolle in der modernen Geschichtsschreibung zuspricht. Die Philosophie, welche für Woltmann die reine Spekulation darstellt, ist für ihn von den Anfängen bis zu den höchsten Spähren der historischen Arbeit unerlässlich. Seiner Auffassung nach obliegt es allein der Spekulation das Gegebene zur Tatsache zu machen und im weiteren Verlauf zur Anschauung zu bringen.An Forschungsliteratur zur allgemeinen Auffassung der Geschichtswissenschaft und ihrer Methode mangelt es indes nicht, bezogen auf die vorliegenden Quelle ließ sich jedoch nur ein Werk finden, welches Woltmann dabei auch nur am Rande erwähnt. Zum Thema der geschichtswissenschaftlichen Methode haben sich allerdings bekannte Historiker der damaligen Zeit zu Wort gemeldet.
