The works were published in an edition of thirteen volumes, first published by Smith, Elder & Co. between 1898 and 1908. Thackeray wrote and illustrated five Christmas books as "by Mr M. A. Titmarsh". They were collected under the pseudonymous title and his real name no later than 1868 by Smith, Elder & Co. This particular edition contains biographical introductions by Thackeray's daughter, Anne Ritchie. Profusely illustrated with no less than 142 plates. ***Near fine in red cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine, and gilt decorative initials WMT to the front cover. Top edge of page block gilt, with the other edges untrimmed. Top edge gilt slightly darkened and dusty. The boards are clean and unmarked, but the red colour on the spine has faded slightly. Head and tail of spine slightly frayed. No creases or bumps. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with black front and rear endpapers. No splitting to the endpapers. Pages beautifully clean. With a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown 'J. C. Jackson' showing a picture of a bulldog atop an open book. No other inscriptions or annotations. No foxing.
