Monde de l'Ouest is connected to this passage, thereby creating an oldd island of part of the coast. The east coast of Australia is still conjectural and is depicted joined to New Guinea in the north and Tasmania in the South. However what is known is an important part of his work was done in collaboration with Louis Charles Desnos (1750-1790 to) a bookseller and geographical engineer for the globes and spheres of His Danish Majesty. A scarce and desirable map, dated in the plate.T…he map perpetuates the myth of California as an island which is portrayed dominating the entire west coast of North America. Australia and New Guinea are incomplete and the southern coastline of Asia extends westwards towards North America. A series of portraits of famous explorers are displayed in medallions around the map including Magellan, Dampierre, Columbus, Drake etc.A tear across the upper left quadrant has been professionally repaired and is unobtrusive. Otherwise fine, clean condition. Faint old fold lines as issued but long stored flat. Approx. 13.5" x 9" (345mm x 235mm) overall.Nicolas De Fer (1646-1720) was a well known and influential French map maker based in Paris who inherited an already successful map business from his father Antoine De Fer in 1687.
