Uncommon first edition of this early novel featuring Chief Inspector Wexford (very stout and with dangerously high blood pressure) and Mike Burford (who is still mourning the death of his wife). This novel, which intertwines two cases - that of a five year old boy who disappears one autumn afternoon, and that of an eleven year old girl who had disappeared several months earlier and is presumed dead - is a wonderful example of her ability to write engrossing literary mysteries, books which reveal a clear understanding of human weaknesses and strengths, a vivid sense of setting, and a satisfying puzzle. 192 pp. Very good in very good dust jacket (a few specks of foxing to the edges of the textblock, some sunning to the spine of the dj).
