The tendency of the public mind, arising from the compara tively free spirit of our institutions in this country, towards the study and improvement of human nature, constitutes a feature of the present day, interesting in the highest degree to the christian philosopher and philanthmpist. The study of man is, of all others, a study of the first and highest importance. Character, natural and acquired, modified by temperament, by education, by society, government, and religion, is a subject worthy of all attention and analysis. All that affects its formation and its re formation all that mysterious process by which the human mind accomplishes its great purposes - the perfecting of its nature, and the elevation of its hopes, should be regarded with a deep and scrutinizing attention, by all those entrusted with its high capacities and lofty destinies. To the teacher, the guardian, and the friend of man, all subjects involving in any degree his welfare, his improvement, and his happiness, present their claims for unbiassed inquiry and deep-felt interest.
