Introduction by Anne Perry
Includes newly commissioned endnotes
In 1887, a young Arthur Conan Doyle published A Study in Scarlet, creating an international icon in the quick-witted sleuth Sherlock Holmes. In this very first Holmes mystery, the detective introduces himself to Dr. John H. Watson with the puzzling line “You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive,” and so begins Watson’s, and the world’s, fascination with this enigmatic character. In A Study in Scarlet, Doyle presents two equally perplexing mysteries for Holmes to solve: one a murder that takes place in the shadowy outskirts of London, in a locked room where the haunting word Rache is written upon the wall, the other a kidnapping set in the American West. Picking up the “scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life,” Holmes demonstrates his uncanny knack for finding the truth, tapping into powers of deduction that still captivate readers today.

"A Study in Scarlet" is the first of the Sherlock Holmes series and therefore gives the reader the perfect opportunity to progressively befriend the famous detective at the same time as the good Dr Watson does. Throughout the course of the book you will marvel at the numerous skills that Holmes has so painfully striven to attain through arduous hard work during his life, and watch as he uses them in practice. As the mystery of the case develops, so does Dr Watson's friendship with Holmes, and the reader finds himself in the same position as Watson; baffled and confused as to how all the pieces of the puzzle which Holmes has so cleverly found, will ever fit together. After reading this book I found myself envious of all the remarkable talents that Holmes possesses, and every time he proposed a new theory, I could not rest until he explained the seemingly simple pathways he used to arrive at his conclusion. This book provides an excellent introduction to the world of Sherlock Holmes, it was the first of this series of books that I bought, and will certainly not be the last. Experience the astonishing mind of perhaps the greatest detective created by reading "A Study In Scarlet" --http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/ROX5YUC5BH8B3/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#ROX5YUC5BH8B3
