Knowledge-Based Systems for Engineers and Scientists describes the principles of knowledge-based systems and related techniques and their use in solving practical problems. The book explains a variety of techniques including the use of artificial intelligence toolkits and languages, rule-based systems, uncertainty, blackboard systems, object-oriented systems, and machine learning. The techniques are illustrated through their applications to practical problems in interpretation and diagnosis, design and selection, planning, and control. Knowledge-Based Systems for Engineers and Scientists is designed for practicing engineers and scientists wanting to learn about this exciting area of computing. It is also an excellent text for final-year undergraduate as well as graduate engineering and computer students wishing to strengthen their specialized computing skills.

From the introduction: "Plenty of books have been written on knowledge-based systems, but I hope that this one is substantially different from previous ones. An emphasis has been placed on showing how knowledge-based systems and related techniques can solve practical engineering and scientific problems. I have therefore tried to describe a range of techniques with the help of realistic examples. Although various applications are explored, I have avoided merely surveying past engineering examples of knowledge-based systems. Instead, examples have been selected on the basis of the lessons that can be drawn from them. In an attempt to make the book more readable than most of the computing literature, my initial intention was to introduce all of the techniques as separate aspects of case studies in interpretation, diagnosis, design, planning and control. After deciding that diagnosis is simply a special case of interpretation, I had four distinct application areas to discuss, with the intention of introducing appropriate techniques along the way. Nonetheless, there was still some fundamental knowledge of tools and techniques that I needed to assume. Therefore I finally settled on dividing the book into two parts. Chapters 1 to 6 describe the tools and techniques with appropriate examples, while chapters 7 to 10 look at some applications in detail." || The book is on the shelf, ready to be appropriately packed, and posted from the pastoral paradise of Peasedown St. John, Bath, by a real bookseller in a real book shop - with my personal guarantee and beady eye on the Consumer Contracts Regulations.
