From the introduction: "Plenty of books have been written on knowledge-based systems, but I hope that this one is substantially different from previous ones. An emphasis has been placed on showing how knowledge-based systems and related techniques can solve practical engineering and scientific problems. I have therefore tried to describe a range of techniques with the help of realistic examples. Although various applications are explored, I have avoided merely surveying past engineering examples of knowledge-based systems.
