[28] pp.; 24 x21 cm.; sewn bound; die-cut; black-and-white; edition size 4000; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed An exquisite artists' book designed and written by Kara Walker. Features elaborate, laser-cut, silhouettes of black paper with pop-ups and pull-outs. "A number of elements give this book its character, besides the distinctive writing, drawing, and social vision of its negress Author. Three particularly are noteworthy. All pop-up books rely on skillful paper engineering. David Eisen's training and experience as an architect guided his three-dimensional design. The cutting of paper with a burning laser beam makes possible much more precise and intricate paper cutouts than was formerly possible with mechanical die cutting. Old-time fonts have come much into fashion." -- from book's colophon. Fine. Book is pristine, Fine, as issued, housed in vellum mailing wrapper, accompanied by Norton Christmas card. Includes original shipping box, which has mild wear and some water stains to the box's exterior. Codice articolo 40325

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Bound volume of offset lithographs and 5 laser-cut, pop-up silhouettes, b/w ill., 23.8 × 21.3 cm, English Published in an edition of 4000 and long out of print, taking the form of a children s pop-up book, Freedom: A Fable transforms Kara Walker s monumental cut-paper silhouettes into a hand-held object. The work s title is a double entendre. The fable is not only the book s form but also its politics namely, the dark irony of the promise deferred of freedom, amid the failures of Reconstruction. The viewer holds the narrative in their hands, literally controlling the movement of bodies and scenes that animate the dark history of the American Civil War and its aftermath, and the story of one woman s hope. Freedom follows the thoughts and actions of a newly emancipated woman about to embark to her new world, in this case Liberia. In the passage presented here, the woman contemplates her relationship to Africans she will encounter, dreaming of a sense of belonging in the new land. This particular copy was gifted to a private collector by the artist Sherrie Levine. VERY GOOD (binding is tight, pages are clear and unmarked, kept in storage in original mylar sleeve since its publication) *SPECIAL SHIPPING RATES + INSURANCE APPLY TO THIS ITEM*.
