Condizione: as new. Cleveland, OH : Cleveland Museum of Art, 2016. Paperback. 62 pp. - Kara Walker's work astutely examines race, gender, and identity. Walker's newest series of large-scale drawings stem from her consideration of monuments and notions of permanence and impermanence following her massive public art project, A Subtlety, in Brooklyn. Influenced in part by the artist's recent residency at the American Academy in Rome, this series of drawings is an extensive examination of how Walker envisions the rise and fall of society. Richly illustrated, this publication includes plates of each drawing, as well as intimate photographs of the artist at work taken by her partner, acclaimed artist and filmmaker Ari Marcopoulos. An introduction by Reto Thuring and Beau Rutland contextualizes the importance of this latest evolution within Walker's oeuvre; John Lansdowne addresses the topic of Christian iconography and its relationship to Walker's new drawings; and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Tracy K. Smith contributes a new poem. In addition, a text by Walker considers her work within the recent political climate. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9780300227154. Keywords : ART.…

dj. First Edition. First edition. Hardcover. First printing. 131 pages. Features texts by Kevin Young, Hilton Als, Christopher Stackhouse, and James Hannaham. From the publisher: "This publication documents Dust Jackets for the Niggerati, a major series of graphite drawings and hand-printed texts on paper that grew out of Walker's attempts to understand how interpersonal and geopolitical powers are asserted through the lives of individuals. In scenes that range from the grotesque to the humorous to the tragic, these works vividly and powerfully explore the themes of transition and migration that run through the history of the African-American experience. The accompanying essays take us through Walker's saga of American experience--the dual streams of renewal and destruction that trace parallel lines through the last century's rapid urbanization, and the complementary emergence of a 'New Negro' identity." A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Tall 4to. Faint edge wear to jacket. Else fine. A very nice copy; internals are bright and clean. African-American artist Kara Walker (born 1969) has been acclaimed internationally for her candid investigations of race, sexuality and violence through the lens of reconceived historical tropes. She had her first solo show at The Drawing Center in New York City in 1994 and, at the age of 28 in 1997, was one of the youngest people to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. This publication documents Dust Jackets for the Niggerati--and Supporting Dissertations, Drawings Submitted Ruefully by Dr. Kara E. Walker, a major series of graphite drawings and hand-printed texts on paper that grew out of Walker's attempts to understand how interpersonal and geopolitical powers are asserted through the lives of individuals. In scenes that range from the grotesque to the humorous to the tragic, these works vividly and powerfully explore the themes of transition and migration that run through the African-American experience. The accompanying essays take us through Walker's saga of American experience--the dual streams of renewal and destruction that trace parallel lines through the last century's rapid urbanization and the complementary emergence of a 'New Negro' identity. Fully illustrated with reproductions of the entire series, and designed by award-winning design studio CoMa with Walker's close collaboration, Dust Jackets for the Niggerati represents a major contribution to the career of one of our most significant and complex contemporary artists.…

The card accompanies this limited edition. 8vo. 23.5 by 21 cm. Unpaginated, twelve leaves, with four pop-ups, which in all but four frame or accent the text. (The first pop-up has no text on its two pages.) Walker herself worked in silhouettes, and she brought her artistry in that medium to pop-ups. Peter Eisen, who created the pop-ups, was a paper engineer and trained architect. The precise lines of the silhouettes were done with a burning laser beam, a new approach to doing this. The paper used was especially fine, heavy paper, with different suppliers for the white and the black papers. Walker, born in 1969, is one of the most celebrated black artists living today. Her work extends to many other areas besides silhouettes, but she is particularly renowned for her large-scale silhouette installations. Pop-Up Design by Peter Eisen, (illustratore).…
