In the Introduction I have endeavoured to give such a general sketch of Roman law and its history as Will prepare readers for the details of the work itself. The translation aims at rendering the text in language intelligible to those who have not, as well as to those who have, a long ao quaintance with Latin. The notes are intended to embody such information as is necessary to elucidate the text, or to give the results of successive legal changes. In the Summary at the end of the volume I have attempted to arrange in a methodical form the principal contents of the text and the notes.
