Sinossi
La crescente ricchezza e un'auto di seconda mano hanno permesso all'autore una gamma geografica precedentemente negata a lui e con vari amici ha intrapreso negli anni '70 e '80 in numerose spedizioni in varie parti del paese, per fotografare locomotive diesel, poi ancora in esecuzione in abbondanza e varietà. C"erano centri di linea principale affollati da esplorare: York, Doncaster, Crewe e il resto, ma anche angoli oscuri che potevano essere trovati solo ricorrendo alle mappe, a volte chiedendo informazioni sulla gente del posto con dialetti appena comprensibili, qualcosa dopo la moda degli esploratori vittoriani.
Al giorno d'oggi ci sono pochissime locomotive al lavoro in questo paese e le app per computer consentono a chiunque di individuare la propria posizione con la stessa facilità di coloro che sono effettivamente responsabili del loro funzionamento - qualcosa di ovviamente inimmaginabile negli anni '70. All'epoca c'erano ancora un numero considerevole di locomotive che lavoravano importanti flussi di traffico in tutto il paese - in particolare carbone e acciaio - su una scala mai sognata oggi.
Le locomotive diesel sul traffico merci funzionavano il più delle volte di notte, quindi dovevano essere rintracciate nelle loro tane diurne, in depositi spesso situati in luoghi fuori mano. Poi c'era il problema dell'ingresso che normalmente poteva essere negoziato con personale simpatico in un'età meno interessata alla salute e alla sicurezza, alle responsabilità, al terrorismo e simili.
Segue una storia di inseguire quella che allora era un'enorme varietà di tipi di locomotive in angoli sconosciuti e sconosciuti del regno, auto sibilanti successive con dispnea, stabilimenti B&B sgradevoli e le forme più benigne di tresp.

There were busy main line centres to be explored York, Doncaster, Crewe and the rest but also obscure corners that could only be found by recourse to maps, sometimes inquiring of locals with barely understandable dialects, something after the fashion of Victorian explorers.Nowadays there are very few locomotives at work in this country and computer apps enable anyone to locate their whereabouts as easily as those actually responsible for operating them something of course unimaginable back in the 1970s. Back then there were still considerable numbers of locomotives working major traffic flows across the country most notably coal and steel on a scale undreamed of today.Diesel locomotives on freight traffic ran more often than not at night so had to be tracked down in their daytime lairs, at depots often located in out of the way places. Then there was the problem of entry which could normally be negotiated with sympathetic staff in an age less concerned with health & safety, legal liabilities, terrorism and the like.There follows a tale of chasing what was then a huge variety of locomotive types in unsung, unknown corners of the kingdom, bump-starting successive wheezing cars, unsavoury B&B establishments and the more benign forms of trespass. This series records in colour and black and white the prototype origins and production lives of our diesel classes, from halting beginings in the 1950s to (sometimed) premature ends.
