Diabetes mellitus is presently a global health challenge due to its increasing prevalence, complications and high mortality rate. Management of the metabolic disorder generally relies on diet, life style changes and drugs. Despite the existence of an array of pharmacological agents for the management of the disorder, adequate glycemic control is not always guaranteed and many of the existing drugs are associated with a number of adverse effects. Scientists are increasingly faced with an urgent need to search for novel therapeutic agents from medicinal plants and endophytes, which are known to be natural sources of safe and potent drugs. This monograph presents a detailed account of the processes of isolation, structural elucidation and evaluation of the antidiabetic compounds from Combretum dolichopetalum, a plant used in traditional medicine for diabetes management. The endophytic fungus from the plant, Nigrospora oryzae, also afforded some antidiabetic compounds. The book is recommended for scientists, clinicians, students of pharmacy, chemistry, medicine and allied professions as well as patients and those who may be interested in diabetes and natural product research.
