The Tansey miniatures, now held by the Bomann Museum in Celle, represent one of the most significant collections of European miniature paintings. This volume joins earlier entries in the series, exploring the collection in key periods and presenting new photographic reproductions of the miniatures at actual size.

This book covers the years between 1795 and 1815, the age of Napoleon I. The most famous images from the Napoleonic era are no doubt the dramatically staged portraits of Napoleon himself, which often portray the ruler in imperial dress or astride a horse in battle. In contrast, the portrait miniatures produced in this era provide realistic images of common people, and thus these collections form a remarkable archive of the men, women, and children who lived through this turbulent war-torn period. This volume contains 150 portraits as well as essays by specialists in the field, offering insights into the artworks, their subjects, and the period in general.
