Significant but little-known museum collections are introduced alongside insightful information about the living conditions of the artists active at the time. Lastly, aspects regarding the production techniques for miniatures are examined. Some of the researchers focused on the early use of miniatures, investigating specific representations or messages conveyed by miniatures. Others explored the special intimacy of the objects. Lara Fenyar, for example, discussed the symbolic content of finger rings in the Maddalena di Giacomo Foundation; these finger rings are adorned by miniature portraits, allegorical depictions, and hair inlays. Due to their small format, miniature portraits were ideal for pictures and motifs that were a little more risqué. Lisa Hecht examined miniatures from the perspective of gender studies; looking at works from the seventeenth century, she shed light on the phenomenon ofwomen dressing up as men. Ulysse Jardat was particularly interested in the interactions between a monarch and his miniature painters. He highlighted the influence which the French regent Philippe II d'Orléans exerted on two of his favourite miniatur - ists, namely Jacques-Antoine Arlaud (1600-1743 and Charles Boit (1662-1727), in the early part of the eighteench century, to name but a few. 288 Seiten mit 200 Farb- und 19 s/w-Abb., gebunden (Michael Imhof Verlag 2026).
