The erosion of the boiler steel in the coal fired boiler at high temperature is the main reason of down time in power generating plants. The maintenance costs to replace the pipes are also very high. So after reviewing the literature, in order to prevent this degradation of boiler tubes by erosion, erosion resistant coatings is the one of the possible solution. In the present investigation two different types of coatings Cr3C2NiCr and WC-12Co were deposited on selected AISI-310 boiler tube steels. The erosion studies were conducted on uncoated as well as the detonation gun and high velocity oxy-fuel coated samples. The erosion experiments were carried out using an air-jet erosion tester at impingement angles of 300 and 900.Alumina particles of size 50 microns were used as erodent. The coating has been characterized by X-ray diffracto-meter (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDAX). The eroded surface is also analyzed by SEM/EDAX.The WC-12Co coating has undergone minimum erosion in both the spraying process as compared to Cr3C2NiCr and bare AISI-310. Detonation Gun sprayed coatings gave better results as compared to High Velocity Oxy Fuel sprayed coatings with respect to erosion.
