Beautiful gilt decoration down the spine and boards with half silk boards decorated with cherubs. Wendell-Holmes was an American physician, poet, professor, lecturer, and author based in Boston. A member of the Fireside Poets, his peers acclaimed him as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series, which began with The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). He was also an important medical reformer. Each volume has The Scott Library catalogue at the rear. The Autocrat, vii, 271pp; The Professor, 288pp; The Poet, 320pp. Approximately 6 ¾ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, lavish gilt decoration which continues onto the boards. Joints good condition gently worn. Corners good condition gently worn and bumped. Boards good condition beautiful gilt decoration down the spine edges together with silk cloth decorated with cherubs covering the main part of the boards which are all contained within a silk covered open fronted slip case, the bottom joint of the slip case is broken, but holding very well. Page edges good condition all gilt See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition plain, lightly tanned and foxed in all volumes. End papers good condition plain, lightly tanned and foxed. Title good condition lightly tanned in all 3 volumes with some foxing in The Professor At The Breakfast-Table.
