Tinted calf binding by Riviere & Son, full pictorial calf, incised and tinted in colours, the front cover depicting an oil lamp on a book, the spine depicting a sword, and the back cover depicting a red rose, gilt titles to the spine, all page edges gilt. Golden Treasury Series. Title Page engraved with full-length engraved portrait of Bacon. Reprinted in 1863, with many alterations in 1865 and with slight corrections in the years up to 1920. An unusual and possibly unique binding given the nature of the binder s work. xxiii, 388pp including the glossary. Approximately 6 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, single raised band, incised decoration of a sword. Some marks and darkening. Joints good condition rubbed, chipped and worn. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition full calf with tinted front board with an incised image of an oil lamp on a book, titles in red to the top, the rear cover with an incised image of a red rose, marked and worn with minor loss to the board edges. Page edges good condition all gilt. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition marbled with gilt filet, bookbinder s stamp in gilt to the front. End papers good condition marbled. Title good condition lightly tanned. Pages good condition half title present, lightly tanned throughout with some foxing. Binding good condition attractive.
