A study delightful and very useful for men of the best quality, and imbrac'd by the greatest princes. FOURTH EDITION 1668 (first published in 1637). Small 4to, approximately 185 x 140 mm, 7¾ x 5½ inches, frontispiece of a cannon, repeated on page 24, a few diagrams in the text, pages: [8], 1-59, [5], bound in half morocco over marbled boards, raised bands to spine, no lettering or label, new endpapers. Small piece missing from lower margin of frontispiece, neatly repaired with very slight loss to ruled border only, now inked in, chip from lower margin of page following title page, nowhere near text, pages age-browned throughout, all still legible, early old ink notes and diagrams in an early hand in 3 margins, small ink blot and 2 small holes to text on page 6, all still legible, ink correction to a couple of numbers, brown stain to upper corner of last 8 leaves, another small one to fore-edge margin of last 5 leaves, many pages with 2 horizontal creases, 2 tiny burn holes in last page of index, affecting 3 letters on recto, neatly repaired, binding tight and firm. Heavily age-browned, all text legible, a fair copy only. Roberts "gives tables showing names, calibre, weight, charge, etc., of the various pieces of ordnance used by the English; table of 'dead ranges' or distance from platform to first graze, and another table of 'randoms'. . also, that a cannon fired at a range of 120 paces will pierce a wall or rampart, 'meanly settled,' 10 or 12 feet, but in close sandy ground, 20 to 24 feet; and that, if properly managed, a cannon may be fired no less than one hundred times a day.
