[ii], 333, [i] pp. Full leather binding, with raised bands and gilt tools on the spine. Red edges. Illustrated hors-texte with an engraving on thicker paper facing the title page. It includes a woodcut finishing fleuron on page 208 and occasional vignettes and typographical markings. Copy with leather restoration at the foot of the spine and boards. Handwritten ownership title on title page. Small moth holes at the head of the last few leaves, next to the inner hinge and without affecting the text area, from page 315 onwards. Tax on the verso of the title page. Last unnumbered page with errata. Beguining on page 209, there is a biographical essay on Frederico by Zimmermann. Curious dialogue on health, but also on the art of rulling. The initial engraving, finely etched in metal plate, depicts the famous doctor treating the King. Frederick's doctor, Johann Georg Ritter von Zimmermann, claimed that the king had let rumours of his homosexuality run so as to avoid being publicly known that his genitals had been seriously affected by a "cruel surgical operation" that had saved his life from a venereal disease. Johann Georg Ritter von Zimmermann / Johann Georg Zimmermann (8 December 1728 in Brugg, Aargau - 7 October 1795 in Hanover) was a Swiss philosophical writer, naturalist and physician. He was the private physician to George III and later to Frederick the Great. In Zimmermann's character there was a strange combination of sentimentality, melancholy and enthusiasm, and it was through the free and eccentric expression of these qualities that he aroused the interest of his contemporaries in his books. He assisted Frederick the Great during the monarch's last illness and later published several books about him. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "these writings reveal an ext.…
