Bound in full brown calf, with ruled gilt panelling and gilt crest of the University of Glasgow to boards, raised bands, gilt decoration and title label to spine; all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, board edges decorated with blind tooling. Illustrated with various engravings of mechanical and scientific devices. With bookplate and bookseller's ticket. Binding is rubbed, worn to extremities, front joint starting. Some spotting in isolated patches, some worm damage visible from top of p.520 to rear board. With prize bookplate, "Alexander McLennan" for "Greek" in 1839. Bookseller's ticket to front free endpaper, "Cass and co., Glasgow". An attractive work on an attractive subject, Millington's thoroughly illustrated account captures the intricacy and beauty of these oftentimes colossal early machines.
