It studied art history in the nineties and was a critic for a while. It feeds on veal and tender duck meat with sesame sauce and lemon marinade. It also appreciates sweet chestnuts, sashimi, and noodles and is blessed with a good appetite. We make it work for every meal so that it doesn t wallow in ingratitude. The little fellow' has a notebook of absorbent bamboo paper and a ballpoint pen with a whirring electric cell inside that keeps the ink warm and flowing. He uses it to note down preliminaries, ideas, similes. Today we hear him say: "Not finishing flourishes in art. It is a kind of succeeding. Failure does not come into it. That is because art is there to invent goals, but not to reach them. An exhibition opening is celebrated and talked about. But its end is passed over in silence. Even the market sees it this way. Ed Kienholz sold off his concept drawings and Matthew Barney his storyboard stuff. Then the spatial installation can take a deep breath, it is left in peace, and the film watches itself.
