A handsome set of Hume's chronicle of Great Britain, uniformly bound with Smollett's later history. Although the two were originally released in the 18th century as rival publications (the philosopher jealously noted the "extraordinary run upon Dr Smollett"), posthumous editions such as this misleadingly presented Smollett's work as a continuation of that of Hume. As it was, the Hume-Smollett History remained very popular into the 19th century. 13 vols, octavo (210 x 129 mm). Portrait frontispieces of each author. Contemporary sprinkled calf, red and black morocco labels, flat spines with gilt rolls, compartments tooled with gilt motif of helmet, sword, and gun, sprinkled edges. Several joints split at head and foot, some restored, a few labels renewed, bindings rubbed, a couple of volumes lightly spotted, a few instances of worming, 19th-century pencil annotations to vol. 4. A very good set.
