A lovely set of this significant study. Covering the very earliest accounts to the death of Alexander the Great, the work was "on an unprecedently large scale. Previous treatments. had been moralistic compilations" (ODNB). Mitford (1744-1827) was a fellow militia officer with Edward Gibbon, whom he succeeded as professor of ancient history at the Royal Academy. The History of Greece was published as five quarto volumes between 1784 and 1818. This is the sixth edition, a reprint of the fifth published in 1829 with revisions and new chronological notes by William King. Each volume features a different title page vignette reproducing coins from the British Museum collections. Lowndes VI, p. 1580. 10 vols, small octavo (167 x 98 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece in vol. I, vignettes on title pages. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines with raised bands, elaborate floral decoration in compartments, red and green morocco labels, gilt roll border to covers, board edges tooled in blind, edges sprinkled brown. Modern bookplate of one Eric Hayward on front pastedowns, small shelf labels lettered "hist" on front free endpapers. Spines sometime repaired and refurbished, minor loss at head of vol. IV spine, wear to a couple of corners, worming to lower outer corner of front pastedown and initial gatherings in vol. VI (just touching a few letters), occasional foxing, otherwise generally clean.
