The fifth part consists of a number of essays on the nature of history and historical method, evidence and progress. Robin George Collingwood (1889-1943) was an Oxford academic, philosopher, historian and archaeologist. Collingwood's manuscript was prepared for publication by Thomas Malcolm Knox (1900-80), later Principal of the University of St Andrews, who has contributed a short introduction on Collingwood as man and philosopher.
