First published in 1695, this traces the emergence of the English nation from pre-Roman times through to the death of William the Conqueror. 'Reflecting Temple's life-long interest in history and intended to encourage other historians to attempt the writing of a full-length history of England, the book demonstrates Temple's characteristic merits and flaws as a historian: a lively and readable style, and a keen insight into politics and history, as well as minor errors in fact and interpretation. Temple may also have intended the book to serve as a defence of his friend, King William III, whose reign in the 1690's was unpopular among many of Temple's contemporaries. The work's major importance lies perhaps in its place among the first scholarly studies of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman culture to appear between 1660 and 1700. Jonathan Swift, serving in the 1690's as Temple's secretary and amanuensis, was later (1709) to tell Lady Giffard, Temple's sister, that he had helped Sir William prepare the book for the press in 1694.' ref: Steensma, R.C.
