A sound copy of this pocket-sized edition of Johnson's Dictionary, with numerous useful additions. A later, revised pocket-sized edition of Johnson's monumental dictionary, first published in 1755. In the original publisher's full morocco binding. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Samuel Johnson. With a List of Abbrevitions of Titles and Directions for Addressing the Nobility, a Collection of French and Latin Phrases Now, an Alphabetical Account of the Heathen Deities, a List of the Cities, Boroughs, and Market Towns in England and Wales, with Their Market Days, and Distances from London, and a variety of additional useful information. In the original publisher's full morocco binding. Externally, sound. Front hinge cracked, but holding firm. Leather ever so slightly lifting to rear hinge. With marks and rubbing to both boards and extremities, resulting in some loss. Heavier rubbing to spine, with minor loss to head and tail of backstrip. Lacing the rear free end paper. Ink inscriptions to both paste downs. Internally, generally sound. Marginal straining throughout, pages generally firm. Pages 133-144 fragile. Scattered spotting throughout, heavier to frontispiece and p. 144-145. Pencil annotations to page 167. A single quotation from page 232 excised. Otherwise, pages clean with age toning. Good.
